Katie Laczko speaks about life as a mermaid activist

When Monash University student Katie Laczko isn’t studying archaeology, the 25 year-old is slipping into a shimmering fishtail to become Aradia – a mermaid dedicated to teaching children about her ocean home.

After forming the group Mermaidens in 2011, Laczko and her fellow mermaids have since become popular at children’s birthday parties, festivals and charity events, although it wasn’t long before Laczko’s passion for the environment led her on to bigger projects.

Laczko speaks to freelance journalist Nadia Wu about the joys of “mermaiding” and her marine conservation efforts.
